Reflect on the engaging past of the Film Co-op and Filmnews days and early independent filmmaking in Australia at this book launch and catch up with documentary makers and friends over a drink.

John Cumming’s book The Films of John Hughes will be launched by
Ross Gibson – Centenary Professor in Creative & Cultural Research, University of Canberra, both John Cumming and John Hughes will be present.

The Filmnews Digitisation Project will be launched by Tina Kaufman – Writer on film and Editor of Filmnews and Liz Jacka – Former film lecturer and co-author of Screening Australia.

“John Cumming’s superb book is not only about the prodigious, exploratory, challenging films, videos and TV programs made by John Hughes; it is also about what it takes to keep moving and changing with the times … John Cumming elegantly gives us both this collective history and a fine appreciation by one artist of another – both of them forever struggling in and with the condition, limits and possibilities of their culture.” Adrian Martin – Adjunct Associate Professor of Film Studies, Monash University

“Filmnews was the film newspaper of the 70s and 80s. It’s where today’s Australian film culture and film industry was first nurtured via review,
analysis and critique.” Gillian Leahy – Associate Professor,  Media Arts and Production, UTS.

Presented by OzDox and Antenna Documentary Film Festival.

Wednesday 14 October 2015, 5.30pm.
