Advocacy group GetUp today announced #ReefReels, a new short film competition seeking entries that inspire people to protect the Great Barrier Reef.

The Reef is under threat from massive dredging developments, shipping and climate change. GetUp’s National Director Sam McLean said: “This is a chance for filmmakers to play a significant part in protecting the Earth’s largest coral reef ecosystem, and one of the most beautiful places in the world.”

The #ReefReels competition is also an opportunity for filmmakers to enter Tropfest this December, and compete for the chance to have their film screened to over 150,000 people. #ReefReels will accept all kinds of films across a range of genres including documentary, drama, comedy and animation.

Top tier prizes and opportunities will be announced when Tropfest entries open on 10 October 2014.
