The Sydney Latin American Film Festival and Macquarie University are once again joining forces to raise awareness of human rights issues facing Latin America. The free Human Rights in Latin America Film Event on Saturday 19th October 2013 at Macquarie University will use film and public discourse to explore one of the most pertinent issues facing Latin American cities: crime, violence and fear.
The event will kick off with drinks and Latin American music, and be followed by the screening of Hernán Jabes’s award-winning thriller Rock, Paper, Scissors (Piedra Papel o Tijera), which was Venezuela’s entry for this year’s Oscars. The film is set in Caracas, a city no stranger to violent crime, and centres around a professional middle-class family and a poor family, whose lives intersect when the child of the wealthy family is kidnapped. The plot develops through the metaphor of the game of chance “Rock, paper, scissors”. Love and crime become powerful forces where all involved are trapped in a whirlpool of emotions. The film explores the lengths that people living in a chaotic and corrupt society will go to in order to protect their loved ones.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion comprising national and international experts on Venezuela, citizen security and crime. Chairing the panel will be Associate Professor Estela Valverde, head of Latin American Studies at Macquarie University, who will be talking to director Hernán Jabes by a pre-recorded interview about contemporary urban violence and human rights in Venezuela. The audience is invited to come along with an inquiring mind and plenty of questions for the panel.
The film and discussion will be followed by Latin American canapés and drinks ensuring the audience leaves with not only food for thought, but satisfaction of all the senses.
