The biggest and brightest names from the film and TV industries are set to speak at the annual event, from star Gracie Otto to Kriv Stenders, director of Red Dog, and Oscar Winner Adam Elliot among others. Now in its third year, Tropfest Roughcut is a day of talks providing insight into the cinematic process, aimed at emerging filmmakers and other passionate film lovers. Each session focuses on a different aspect of the filmmaking process and will feature a varied lineup of some of the finest talent from the Australian film and TV industry.
Academy Award winner Adam Elliot (Harvie Krumpet, Mary and Max) will explore Claymation and share his experience winning an Oscar and elements of his creative process. The team from Foxtel’s new Australian drama mini-series Devil’s Playground will also deliver a special talk on the making of the anticipated psychological thriller. Those in attendance will be producer Helen Bowden, EP/Lead actor Simon Burke, writer/show runner Blake Ashyford and actor Matt Levett. Australian TV creators Imogen Banks and John Edwards (Tangle, Puberty Blues, Offspring) will talk about their experiences developing works for the small screen. Kriv Stenders, director of the award winning box-office hit Red Dog and new film Kill Me Three Times, will appear in Q&A with host Rob Carlton, to talk about the production of film in Australia.
Fresh from the world premiere of her debut feature film The Last Impresario at the London Film Festival, Australian filmmaker and actor, Gracie Otto, will join a panel with other Australian film industry heavyweights, to be announced in the lead up to the event.
Also as part of the line-up announced, producer Behren Schultz (recently named by SPAA as one of their “Ones to Watch”) and Director Jim Lounsbury of boutique production company, Eponine Films will be sharing their insights into the world of DSLR filmmaking as they embark on the journey to bring their latest project, Love Is Now (MyNikonLife.com.au/LoveIsNowFilm), to the big screen. To be shot entirely on Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses, Eponine will explore the challenges and creative opportunities made possible by this emerging trend – a trend that many Tropfest filmmakers have embraced themselves, entering as part of the recently established, and increasingly popular, Nikon DSLR Film Category.
On revealing these impressive names, Michael Laverty, the Managing Director of Tropfest, said, “In its third year, we’re looking at delivering the finest line-up of industry talent to date. The feedback from the last two years has been overwhelmingly positive and both filmmakers and the public alike have enjoyed the rare opportunity to hear and learn from the creative minds who are really making their mark on the industry.”
