Young at Heart 2013

By February 5, 2013 Events

Young at Heart is a film festival dedicated entirely to seniors, their friends and relatives. With $5 tickets to a program of international premieres and classic films on the big screen, Young at Heart is a festival seniors can call their own. A flagship event of NSW Seniors Week, Young at Heart is back for its eighth year in 2013, running from 17th to 24th March. The festival presents 19 daytime screenings in Sydney (Dendy Opera Quays), Casula (Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre) and Parramatta (Riverside Theatre). Selected titles also screen in over 30 regional towns across NSW and beyond.

Premieres this year include period drama Hyde Park on the Hudson starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney, Robert Redford’s political thriller The Company You Keep with Julie Christie and Susan Sarandon, 2013 Academy Award nominee Kon-Tiki, and French romance Beloved starring Catherine Deneuve.

Also screening is award-winning Hong Kong drama A Simple Life, French ensemble comedy Skylab with Julie Delpy and Emmanuelle Riva, the Australian premiere of seniors beauty pageant documentary Pretty Old, and Cloudburst, a road movie comedy starring Oscar-winners Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker as ageing lesbians hoping to get hitched.

The festival is also an excuse to stroll down memory lane, flashing back to classics from 40 years ago (American Graffiti), 50 years ago (Charade, Viva Las Vegas) and beyond (Casablanca). A special FREE screening of Singin’ In the Rain will feature songs from the film played live by Greg Poppleton and his Bakelite Orchestra.

Other screenings will include social mixers, Q&As with guest filmmakers and special access services such as open captions for the hard of hearing.

The best new Australian short films featuring seniors in lead roles will screen at the Young At Heart Short Film Awards. The audience will vote for the best film, alongside an esteemed jury, which includes actor Roy Billing (Underbelly), award-winning documentary filmmaker Tom Zubrycki and Seniors Week ambassador Kumar Perreira (Masterchef).
