Papa’s Sonata is an alternative short film without dialogue so we need actors with dance/theatre/miming backgrounds to fill the five lead roles.
It’s all about how well you convey externally what the character is going through internally, keeping it realistic and not farcical. If you are chosen you will be given a rough screenplay piece for your specific character, which we would like you to act out.
The roles are:
Father—Age: late 20s-40s The most complex character, the father attempts to uphold the ‘American dream’ while afflicted by a failing economy that throws him into a seemingly losing situation, as the fantasy of the typical happy family home begins to fall apart, so does his perception of the world around him. He’s an everyman character, not a bad person, he’s a good guy in a bad situation; he’s just human.
Son—Age: 7-10 (can be played by an actor up to 15 years old)
The Son, is still discovering the world represents a part within the father; his innocence, happiness and hope is all within this boy and as their connection begins to slip away, so does the fathers connection with the world, though the son in his early years remains naive to the gravity of the situation.
Mother—Age: late 20s-early 30s
The Mother, she holds the entire film together; she is the last thing in the fathers life that makes his house feel like a home. She’s eloquent, caring and loving but ultimately fragile and weak, afflicted by an awful illness that will suddenly take her life. Through her life she tries to her best to be there for both her son and the father and keep stability in the household. She understands the fathers position and tries to remain strong, not just for him but for the family.
Older Son—Age: late 20s-early 30s
The Son, now older, now a father himself with a wife and child of his own, returns to his father with new understanding of the old man’s situation, with the hope to start a new chapter in their relationship that managed to fall apart so long ago.
Male Boss—Age: 30s-50s
There are also a number of important side characters in the world that are also victims of the rat race. One of the key characters being the Boss (A scrappy looking man, brownish colour pallet, kind of overweight, bitter, cold, abrasive, antagonistic) who runs a dodgy building company, ordering workers around like an enraged opera conductor. He appears on all the advertisements representing the concept of the perfect happy family home which has a level of irony when contrasted with the father’s actual reality.
