TURF – Public Housing Goes Public

By November 19, 2013 Events

1 house. 2 locations. 21 stories. A first-of-its-kind initiative by internationally acclaimed story activist Jordan Bryon, TURF showcases art by public housing residents in a purpose-built traveling replica of a public housing unit. Step inside the elevator-turned-sound art booth and be transported. Wander through time and space, hearts and minds down a hallway of photos, paintings and projections. From penthouse to park bench and Sugar from one Neighbour, ice from another are stories to read in open diaries and watch on the living room TV.

“In gentrified inner city suburbs, public housing and prime real estate are side by side but worlds apart. TURF is where these worlds collide,” says Jordan. “Most people want nothing to do with public housing – it’s dirty, it’s dangerous, it’s different. Sure it can be all of those things but it’s so much more. TURF opens the doors and invites everyone in to see public housing for what it really is: a cocoon of diversity, dreams and dilemmas.”
